Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)
Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA)
The Order of Christian Initiation of Adults (OCIA) is a transformative journey for those seeking to become Catholic or complete their Sacraments of Initiation. This profound process is also open to adults who wish to deepen their understanding of their faith, as well as those who want to serve as sponsors. The OCIA is an enriching opportunity to explore the depths of our Christian heritage.
The Phases of OCIA
Inquiry
The first phase is the period of Inquiry. This is a time for seekers who are curious about the Catholic faith to begin their journey. There is no set timeframe for this period; it is an open invitation to ask questions and seek understanding about the Church and its teachings.
Catechumenate
The second phase is the period of the Catechumenate. During this time, individuals are invited to delve deeper into the teachings and doctrines of the Church. This preparatory phase is for those who are readying themselves for Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion. For those who are already baptized Christians, this period is referred to as Candidacy, where they prepare for full reception into the Church.
Election
The third phase is the period of Election. This is a solemn time when Catechumens are called to make a personal and interior commitment. Having journeyed far, they are asked to declare their readiness and desire to enter into full union with the Church. At this stage, they are no longer Catechumens but are called the Elect.
Mystagogia
The final phase is the period of Mystagogia, a time for deepening their faith. Having experienced the Sacraments of Initiation—Baptism, Confirmation, and Communion—they are now neophytes, the newly enlightened.
